Central Virginia Fishing

There is something special about finding the perfect fishing spot in a mountain stream. We started fly fishing a few years ago when our friends at TaleTellers Fly Shop introduced us to a few great trout streams around Central Virginia. These are a couple of our favorite spots for trout and bass fishing.

Piney River

The South Fork of Piney River is noted for its nice population of wild brook trout. Like most of the streams in the area, it starts out very small and ends up much larger.

The South Fork Piney River has a very diverse population of aquatic insects. You will find early season Quill Gordons hatch, later a good March Browns hatch along with sulphurs that appear later in the year. There are many others including plenty of stoneflies and caddisflies.

Note: Be mindful not to trespass on private property. Most stream access within the Washington National Forest is public and you are welcome to fish there with a license.

Shoe Creek

Shoe Creek is a stream where anglers will find a variety of fish including brown trout, brook trout and rainbow trout. Whether you’re fly fishing, spinning or baitcasting, your chances of getting a bite here are good.

Look over the Virginia Fishing License options, fishing rules and fishing regulations. Please remember to check with the local Fish and Wildlife department to ensure the stream is open to the public.
